CHAPEL

Chapel is an important aspect of our ministry at Noah’s Ark Learning Center. We gather each week for singing, Bible stories, and prayer led by our FIRST pastoral staff. Chapel is held in our FIRST chapel - the red door as you enter the courtyard.

Your child will receive a handout on each week’s chapel story. We encourage you as a parent to also read or tell the story at home to further strengthen the message and values for your child’s life. Take the opportunity to talk with your child about the story, faith and what you believe.

We look forward to being a part of nurturing the spiritual growth of your child in the coming year.

FITNESS FUN

Each week your child will experience the fun of moving, stretching, jumping, balancing...growing in their development of large & small motor skills...exercising their body and spirit!

In the fall we’ll have Fitness Fun Olympic Relays and in the spring look for the Fitness Fun Trike-a-thon!

Eisha will do an assessment of each preschool child at the beginning and end of the school year.

Eisha Bohman, Youth & Community Life Minister at FIRST, will lead “Fitness Fun” in the Trinity Center. Eisha brings a Master’s Degree in Coaching & Sport Pedagogy, experience as a collegiate basketball player, high school coach, strength & conditioning coach and a faith mentor of children and youth to our FIRST programs.

A CARING ENVIRONMENT FOR LEARNING

Noah’s Ark was established in 1974 to meet the childcare needs of this community. Our philosophy is based on the knowledge that a child’s growth takes place in stages that occur in a predictable pattern. God has made each child unique, and each one has an individual rate and style of learning. We provide opportunities for children to learn through planned and spontaneous activities, in a safe and loving environment. As a ministry of First Lutheran Church, we are a non-profit organization providing service on a non-discriminatory basis, giving equal treatment without regard to race, religion, national origin or ancestry. Noah’s Ark is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children and part of the Evangelical Lutheran Education Association.

CONNECT!

CONNECT provides opportunities for your
family to spend time together
learning...playing...exploring God’s world…
building relationships with one another!

CONNECT ~ Family Learning Time
~ Science, Math, Literacy, Art, Music ~
CONNECT is held on the second Tuesday of most months from 6:00 - 7:00PM in the Noah’s Ark classrooms. These are times for parents and children to explore special learning centers together. Healthy snacks will be provided in the courtyard as families connect with one another!

CONNECT ~ Family Fun Time
Saturday events for the whole family to places around North County...also special celebrations including the Harvest Festival and Children’s Day

At FIRST we believe it is important for our children to begin learning at an early age what it means to share with our neighbors in need locally and around the world. We hope your family will choose to teach your child to be a generous giver!

Servant Ministry ~ Helping Hands and Hearts

FOOD CART ~ Our FIRST grocery cart is located in the church sanctuary. You may drop off non-perishable food items at anytime either in the grocery cart, the chapel or the office. The food is distributed by Interfaith Community Services to local hungry families.

LOOSE CHANGE COLLECTION ~ During the coming year we will have a collection of loose change for a special project to connect with children around the world and make a difference in their lives.

CHRISTMAS GIVING TREE ~ Your family will have the opportunity to choose a name off the giving tree in the Noah’s Ark

NAPTIME

Dolphin ~ Tiger ~ Bee

Mats for napping are purchased in the office at $10.00 for full-day students in the Dolphin, Tiger and Bee rooms. Children in these classes need to bring 2 crib sheets (twin size are too big) to cover the mat and a small blanket or bath towel labeled with your child’s name to keep in your child’s cubby.

Turtle ~ Bug

The children in the Toddling Turtle and Cuddle Bug classes need to supply 2 crib sheets and 2 small blankets per child. Cots or cribs will be provided for these children.

At the end of each week, sheets and blankets will be bagged and sent home to be washed. They should be returned the following week.

PLEASE LABEL ALL YOUR CHILD’S ITEMS!

DRESS

Noah’s Ark is a “hands-on” school. Even though we do use art smocks, the children will at times get glue, paint or dirt on their clothing. It is best to send your child in play clothes, as dressy clothes tend to inhibit free play.

Clothing that is easy for the child to remove is important, for they must be able to pull down/up these garments for themselves.

Comfortable shoes such as sneakers are the best for running, jumping, and climbing. For your child’s safety, please NO open-toed or backless shoes or boots of any kind. Preschoolers need to wear athletic shoes for Fitness Fun (Thursday or Friday).

Make sure to bring a sweatshirt or jacket appropriate for the weather outside.

An extra set of clothing needs to be supplied in a labeled Ziploc bag, which will be placed in your child’s cubby.

PLEASE LABEL ALL YOUR CHILD’S ITEMS!

RESTROOMS

Children in the Preschool program (3 years old through pre-kindergarten) must be completely potty trained. They should be able to tell the teacher when they need to use the restroom, pull down/up his or her own clothes and wipe independently.

A teacher will always accompany children to the restroom and will assist them in the case of an emergency.

We highly recommend comfortable, easy to remove clothing with as few buttons, snaps and/or zippers as possible.

Remember: Dress your child for success and to build self reliance.

DISCIPLINE POLICY

The building of self-esteem, social development, and emotional growth are significant elements of our program.

We have a simple rule that “safety is first.” We consistently try to encourage cooperation and “using our words, not our hands” to say how the child feels.

Learning to make good choices can be hard. When conflicts do arise, redirection and choices are offered. In the rare event that the child cannot handle the situation with control, a “time to think,” cooling-off period, may be given. When the child feels ready to return to the group activity, he or she is free to do so.

CONFERENCES

A close relationship between home and school is encouraged so both may benefit from cooperation,
understanding and planning. The staff wish to become acquainted with you and your family. However, when children are present in the classroom or on the playground, the teacher’s responsibility is to give their full attention to those children. Each child’s safety is their primary concern.

If you need to talk at length with a teacher, please arrange for a meeting or to have a phone
conversation at a time convenient to both of yo
u.

LATE PICK UP POLICY

Noah’s Ark closes at 6:00PM sharp.
After the maximum of 10 hours of care, or after the 6:00PM closing time, there is a charge of $1.00 per minute per child. You will be asked to sign a Late Pick-Up Slip in agreement with the late charges. The charge will be added to your account and is payable upon receipt of statement.

We understand that emergencies are a rare occurrence and sometimes unavoidable. Please avoid any late pick-ups if at all possible. As always, your child will be cared for, but please call if you’re detained so that our staff can reassure your child.

SIGN-IN and SIGN-OUT POLICY

Children must be signed in and out daily with a full and legible signature, either in the classroom or on the playground. Photo identification will be required of anyone signing out your child who is not recognized by the current teachers on staff. Verification will be made that they are authorized to pick up the child.
This is for the protection of both you and your child.

COMMUNICATION

Monthly Newsletters for the Preschool and Infant/Toddler programs will be posted on our website noahsarkvista.com and in the classrooms to keep you informed of upcoming events, changes to this calendar and special articles.

Teacher/Parent Conferences are available when more time is needed other than the class sign in/out times. Our partnership with you and your input is important to us.

A Parent File Folder for each child is located close to the classroom sign in/out sheet and is designed to insure that you can find all important papers, including your child’s special work. Please take time to check it at the end of each day.

If you need to contact the director, please stop by the office, give her a call, send an email, or write a note on a communication sheet in the office and place it in her box.

BIRTHDAYS

If parents would like to celebrate their child’s birthday with a special snack, arrangements can be coordinated with the classroom teacher. We encourage low sugar items, such as muffins, fruit/nut breads, cheese or fresh fruit. Please note that we have a “No Candy at School” policy.

Your child’s teacher will help celebrate with a birthday crown and songs. Party favors or goodie bags may be brought, but will stay in the children’s cubbies to go home. If you have invitations for a private party, please put them discreetly into the child’s cubby. Children do notice when they do not receive an invitation. Also, we ask that you please not send any gifts for other children to school. Thank you!

IMPORTANT SAFETY ISSUES

  • Always remember to hold your child’s hand while in the parking lot AT ALL TIMES.
  • Children must always wear closed toe shoes, no backless shoes and no boots of any kind.
  • All gates are to be opened by adults only. These are designed for the safety of all the children and are a “Parent/Teacher Job”. Gates are to be closed at all times.
  • State Licensing requires a full and legible signature on the sign-in sheet when anyone drops off or picks up your child.
  • Make sure you personally check-in with the teacher before leaving the classroom or playground.
  • Always remember to close the classroom doors completely when entering or leaving a classroom.
  • Please make sure that while driving in the parking lot you do not exceed the 5 MPH SPEED LIMIT.
  • Always park in the marked spaces in the parking lot – NOT in the fire lanes.

YOUR CHILD’S SAFETY IS IMPORTANT TO US!

MAINTAINING A HEALTHFUL ENVIRONMENT

The Noah’s Ark staff implements procedures to help prevent illness and the transmission of germs between children.

Teachers do a simple wellness check of each child as they enter the classroom and begin their time with us. Proper hand-washing procedures are posted and followed by all adults and children. Toys or other items that have been put in a child’s mouth are isolated and then washed by hand with detergent, rinsed and air dried. Routine daily cleaning and sanitizing of all surfaces in the facility is done by the staff and a contracted janitorial service. Outdoor surfaces, including the sand in the sand box, are sanitized on a routine basis.

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR THE EDUCATION OF YOUNG CHILDREN

NAEYC Accreditation is a sign that your child will be safe, healthy, and learning each day. NAEYC has developed 10 standards for high-quality early childhood education. Programs that meet these standards provide a safe and healthy environment for children, have teachers who are well-trained, have access to excellent teaching materials, and work with curriculum that is appropriately challenging and developmentally sound.

Noah’s Ark is proud to have earned this distinctive accreditation.

CHILD CAR SEAT LAW ~ CALIFORNIA’S “LAW OF LOVE”

Protect your child — it’s the law! As of January 1, 2002, when traveling in a motor vehicle:
Children must be secured in an appropriate child passenger restraint (safety seat or booster seat) until they are 6 years old OR at least 60 pounds.

CAREGIVER BACKGROUND CHECK PROGESS
CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES

The California Department of Social Services works to protect the safety of children in child care by licensing child care centers and family child care homes. Our highest priority is to be sure that children are in safe and healthy child care settings. California law requires a background check for any adult who owns, lives, in, or works in a licensed child care home or center. Each of these adults must submit finger prints so that a background check can be done to see if they have any history of crime. If we find that a person has been convicted of a crime other than a minor traffic violation, he/she cannot work or live in the licensed child care home or center unless approved by the Department. This approval is called an exemption.

A person convicted of a crime such as murder, rape, torture, kidnapping, crimes of sexual violence or molestation against children cannot by law be given an exemption that would allow them to own, live in or work in a licensed child care home or center. If the crime was a felony or a serious misdemeanor, the person must leave the facility while the request is being reviewed. If the crime is less serious, he/she may be allowed to remain in the licensed child care home or center while the exemption request is being reviewed.

How the Exemption Request is Reviewed
We request information from police departments, the FBE and the courts about the person’s record. We consider the type of crime, how many crimes there were, how long ago the crime happened and whether the person has been honest in what they told us.

The person who needs the exemption must provide information about: the crime; what they have done to change their life and obey the law; whether they are working, going to school, or receiving training; whether they have successfully completed a counseling or rehabilitation program.

The person also gives us reference letters from people who aren’t related to them who know about their history and their life now.

We look at all these things very carefully in making our decision on exemptions. By law this information cannot be shared with the public.

How to Obtain More Information
As a parent or authorized representative of a child in licensed child care, you have the right to ask the licensed child care home or center whether anyone working or living there has an exemption. If you request this information, and there is a person with an exemption, the child care home or center must tell you the person’s name and how he or she is involved with the home or center and give you the name, address, and telephone number of the local licensing office. You may also get the person’s name by contacting the local licensing office. You may find the address and phone number on our website. The website address is http://ccl.dss.cahwnet.gov/RegionalOf_1829.htm

WELLNESS POLICY

State regulations require your child not be admitted to the center and/or sent home if any of the following symptoms of illness are present:

  • The illness/recovery results in the need for greater care than the staff can provide without compromising the health and safety of the other children
  • The illness/recovery prevents the child from participating in facility activities
  • Temperature – 100 degrees or greater accompanied by behavior changes or other symptoms of illness
  • Runny nose (thick or runny secretions) coupled with coughing, difficulty breathing, lethargy, persistent crying and/or irritability
  • Diarrhea – 1-2 incidents, increases in stool water, and/or form that cannot be contained in a diaper
  • Vomiting – one incident
  • Mouth sores with drooling or other draining sores
  • Rash with fever or behavior changes
  • Conjunctivitis, Impetigo, Head Lice, Scabies, Shingles, Respiratory Illness or Strep Throat
  • Chicken pox – exclusion: six days after onset of rash/until all sores have dried and crusted

Only medication prescribed by a physician will be administered. It must be in the original container with full instructions on the label. The proper medication form must be completed by the parent.

SUNSCREEN should be applied by the parent before the child is brought to school. A staff member can apply sunscreen in the afternoon. However, a form authorizing staff to apply a topical ointment must be filled out by the parent.

RECOVERY

When a child is sent home ill, he/she may not attend school the following day and may not return until they are symptom free for 24 hours. If the physician has prescribed an antibiotic or other medication, the child must stay home until he or she has completed the first 24 hours of treatment or medication.

INJURIES

Minor injuries, such as scratches and bumps, will be reported to parents on an “Ouch Report.” It will give a description of what happened and how we took care of it. In the event of more serious injuries, such as cuts, sprains and/or broken bones, the child will be made comfortable and the parents will be called. Should a major life-threatening injury occur, paramedics will be called immediately, and the parents will be notified.

Please keep the office informed in writing of any changes to your emergency contact information.
